Nigeria's raw cashew exports to Asian processors: how new container surcharges reshape the lane's economics

Nigeria shipped 49,507 tonnes of raw cashew nuts to Vietnam in May 2026, down 29 per cent from 69,728 tonnes a year earlier, while freight on Nigeria to Asia loads now runs at about US$3,000 per container after carrier surcharges. A fixed per-container add-on lands hardest on a high-priced Nigerian nut, which is what is reshaping this lane.

The volume fall comes from Vietnam Customs data reported by FreshPlaza. Cote d'Ivoire took the demand, shipping 107,090 tonnes to Vietnam in May, up 93 per cent from 51,603 tonnes in 2025, after the General Department of Vietnam Customs benchmarked Nigerian raw cashew at US$1,600 per tonne against US$960 per tonne for Ivorian nuts.

The problem is price, not demand. Between January and May 2026 Vietnam imported nearly 1.45 million tonnes of cashew nuts; Tanzania, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria together supplied nearly 339,000 tonnes, about 23 per cent of the total, per FreshPlaza.

On freight, Nigerian trade reporting estimates that each container leaving Nigerian ports for Vietnam, India and other Asian destinations now attracts US$3,000 in freight following CMA CGM and Maersk surcharges, as reported by CropGPT and the New Telegraph. That reporting puts the extra bill on about 12,000 containers carrying 370,000 tonnes at N50 billion (US$36 million), and Nigeria's 2026 Vietnam target at N469 billion (US$341 million) from 200,000 tonnes.

Direction matters. Most published peak-season surcharge notices are drafted for the inbound Far East to West Africa direction; the US$3,000 figure above is outbound Nigeria to Asia.

How much does a US$3,000 container charge add to a 20ft cashew load?

Nigerian raw cashew in shell is commonly loaded at around 18 tonnes per 20ft container. At the US$1,600 benchmark that is about US$28,800 of FOB value; US$3,000 of freight adds roughly US$167 per tonne, about 10.4 per cent of FOB.

Attribute FOB Lagos Delivered, US$3,000 per box
Load 18 tonnes 18 tonnes
Value per tonne US$1,600 US$1,600
Freight per container Excluded US$3,000
Freight per tonne Not applicable About US$167
Freight as share of FOB value Not applicable About 10.4 per cent

What this means for buyers

A fixed per-container charge rewards fuller loads. On 20ft, US$3,000 over 18 tonnes is about US$167 per tonne; the same charge on a 16-tonne fill is about US$188 per tonne. Set and verify a minimum fill weight in the contract, since per-tonne freight falls as fill weight rises.

Freight discipline also changes the FOB versus CIF decision. Nigeria's US$1,600 benchmark already sits US$640 per tonne above Cote d'Ivoire's, so a per-container add-on widens the gap unless the buyer controls booking. Fix the freight basis and surcharge pass-through in the contract before stuffing, and compare Nigerian offers on a delivered basis rather than headline FOB.

Booking lead time carries more risk. The Nigerian Ports Authority reported total container traffic up 11.3 per cent to 602,392 TEUs in Q2 2026, yet outward laden containers fell 3.9 per cent, so export boxes are tight even as volumes grow. Apapa and Tin Can Island Port together still handle more than half of Nigeria's international cargo movement, per Travo, so plan around Lagos terminal congestion as well as carrier space.

FAQ

Q: Why did Nigeria's raw cashew exports to Vietnam fall in May 2026?
A: FreshPlaza, citing Vietnam Customs data, shows volume fell to 49,507 tonnes from 69,728 tonnes, a 29 per cent drop, as Nigeria's US$1,600 per tonne benchmark ran above Cote d'Ivoire's US$960 per tonne, letting buyers shift to cheaper Ivorian supply.

Q: How much does the US$3,000 per container charge add per tonne?
A: On an 18-tonne 20ft load it is about US$167 per tonne, roughly 10.4 per cent of the US$1,600 per tonne FOB benchmark.

Q: Does the US$3,000 figure apply to cargo arriving into Nigeria?
A: No. It is an outbound Nigeria to Asia figure. Published CMA CGM peak-season surcharge notices are generally framed for the inbound Far East to West Africa direction, so the outbound number is not an inbound rate.
