Uganda Coffee Prices Slide in Early September: Bugisu AA and Screen 18 Robusta Down From July Peaks
Uganda's two principal export grades traded at their lowest levels since early July in the first week of September 2026. The September 4 UCDA daily report put Bugisu AA at 293.10 US cents per pound and screen 18 Robusta at 170.83 US cents per pound, both down roughly 15 percent from the peaks they hit in the first half of July, with the decline accelerating through the opening week of the month.
The slide is broad and looks driven by the international market rather than anything specific to Uganda, because Arabica and Robusta have fallen about the same distance from their July highs. What buyers should track is the grade spread underneath, because the gap between the washed Arabica lines and the Robusta screens is what determines whether current offers represent a genuine discount or a brief lull before the main-crop build arrives in November.
What the September 4 numbers show
The September 4 report, sourced from the UCDA daily indicative series, shows Bugisu AA at 293.10 and screen 18 Robusta at 170.83 US cents per pound. The washed Arabica group is tightly stacked: Bugisu A, Bugisu PB and Wugar sit at 292.10, Bugisu B at 290.10, and Bugisu AA holds a steady 1.00 US cent premium over Bugisu A. Drugar, the dry-processed line, trades 21.00 US cents below Bugisu AA, a discount of about 7 percent that has held all summer.
The Robusta screens are packed even tighter. Screen 18 leads screen 15 by 5.00 US cents and screen 12 by 7.00 US cents, a 4.3 percent premium for the top screen over the base grade, worth roughly USD 154 per tonne. Live UCDA rates confirm the same September 4 levels for both benchmark grades.
Measured from the summer peaks, the two markets dropped about the same distance, which points to an international move rather than domestic pressure. Bugisu AA peaked at 344.95 US cents on July 8 and fell 7.6 percent in the single week from August 28 (317.15) to September 4. Robusta screen 18 reached 201.97 US cents on July 9 and is off 15.4 percent from that high, with a 9.2 percent drop in the month since August 5 (188.07).
| Metric (Sept 4, 2026) | Bugisu AA | Screen 18 Robusta |
|---|---|---|
| Close, US cents per pound | 293.10 | 170.83 |
| July peak (date) | 344.95 (July 8) | 201.97 (July 9) |
| Change from peak | about -15% | -15.4% |
| Equivalent tonne price | about USD 6,462 | about USD 3,766 |
How the grade gap reads for buyer timing
The spread between the two markets says more than either price alone. On July 4 the Bugisu AA premium over screen 18 was 107.26 US cents, or 57.1 percent. It widened through the summer to a peak of 150.48 US cents on August 16, then narrowed as Arabica fell faster than Robusta in the final week. On September 4 the premium stood at 122.27 US cents, or 71.6 percent over screen 18, still about a quarter wider than in early July.
The discount sits with Robusta. With only 7.00 US cents separating screens 12, 15 and 18, there is little to pay right now for the top Robusta screen, while the washed Arabica lines keep a clear premium structure. Buyers paying local suppliers in shillings should watch the exchange rate, which the report notes traded near 3,758 on September 4, because the US cent moves are moving faster than usual.
What this means for buyers
This pullback is not arrival pressure from a new crop. Uganda's main Robusta crop starts reaching exporters around November and peaks in January and February, and the Arabica main crop on Mount Elgon runs roughly September to January, peaking around November, as the harvest calendar guide explains. September sits in the thin between-seasons window when old-crop stocks are lighter and prices normally firm, so the fall reflects what buyers will pay for carry-over stock and the first new-crop lots rather than supply pressure.
For procurement, that argues for a cautious but firm stance. The daily lines moved 5 to 9 percent in the four weeks to September 4, so any offer built on August levels is already stale; quote from the current report. Match the certificate grade to the exact line you price, since the 7.00 US cent gap between screens 18 and 12 adds up on container volumes. Keep Drugar separate from washed Arabica in comparisons, because its discount to Bugisu AA has held near 7 percent all summer. If the washed Arabica that comes off the washing stations as the harvest builds toward November holds, the slide has run its course; if it keeps giving, buyers who waited gain leverage.
FAQ
Are Uganda coffee prices in September 2026 lower than in July? Yes. As of the September 4 UCDA report, Bugisu AA was 293.10 US cents per pound and screen 18 Robusta 170.83 US cents per pound, both about 15 percent below their July peaks.
Which grade has fallen more from its July peak, Arabica or Robusta? Roughly the same. Screen 18 Robusta is down 15.4 percent from its July 9 high of 201.97 US cents, while Bugisu AA is about 15 percent below its July 8 peak of 344.95 US cents, a pattern consistent with an international market move.
When does new-crop volume arrive to test these price levels? Uganda's main Robusta crop starts reaching exporters around November and the main Arabica crop peaks around November, so the September slide reflects carry-over and early lots rather than new-crop arrival pressure.
